Go beyond the microKORG’s edit matrix

The original microKORG gives you a broad synthesis engine through a small display and a parameter matrix. Olean’s MK Editor groups the two Timbres, oscillators, filter, amplifier and modulation into computer views, with graphical envelopes and sound-design shortcuts alongside detailed controls.

Its five Engine choices are recipes for the microKORG’s existing oscillators and modulation: Subtractive, X-Mod FM, Digital, Ring/Sync and Noise/Perc. They do not add new synthesis hardware or a separate software sound engine.

Inside the current editor

  • Two-Timbre sound editing: oscillator wave/level/pitch controls, noise, filter and amplifier, with draggable envelopes.
  • Shape and Quick Mod: Bright, Snap, Attack, Release, Movement and Space macros, plus shortcuts for vibrato, wobble and common modulation routes.
  • Sound exploration: five synthesis recipes, Randomize and Mutate, Timbre copy/swap, undo/redo and A/B comparison.
  • Modulation: two LFOs and four virtual patches, with detailed voice/pitch controls.
  • FX and arpeggiator: delay, modulation effect, graphical two-band EQ and arp controls with a step view.
  • Preset librarian: categories, tags, favourites, notes and .syx import/export, plus a 128-program synth-memory grid and guarded bank/write tools.
  • MIDI/project workflow: direct or host routing, incoming program handling, monitor and stored plugin state.

Hardware, formats and requirements

The intended instrument is the original KORG microKORG. Compatibility with microKORG XL, XL+, microKORG 2 or other models is not established.

Planned macOS formats: VST3, Audio Unit and Standalone for Apple Silicon and Intel. A Windows release is not confirmed. Final supported OS versions and DAW compatibility will be listed before launch.

Connect the instrument’s DIN MIDI ports through a suitable computer MIDI interface. Enable SysEx and Control Change on the instrument. Receiving programs needs the return MIDI connection; stored-memory writes require the relevant memory-protect settings and an explicit editor action. Route the instrument’s audio outputs into an audio interface to hear it.

What it is and isn’t

The editor sends parameters and programs to physical microKORG hardware. It is not a microKORG emulation, and it does not include KORG’s software or sound library.

The current UI focuses on synth sounds. Vocoder program data is preserved, but there is no detailed Vocoder editing page. A morph function exists in the development core without a user interface and is not offered here as a feature.

microKORG editor FAQ

Do the Engine buttons add new synthesis engines?

No. They configure useful starting combinations of the original instrument’s oscillators, cross-modulation, digital waves, ring/sync and noise.

Can I edit the Vocoder?

Not in detail in the current version. Vocoder data is retained, but a dedicated Vocoder editor has not been implemented.

Does it support microKORG XL or microKORG 2?

Those models are not confirmed. This page covers the original microKORG.

Can I save and organise SysEx patches?

The current librarian implements .syx import/export and local presets. Hardware program/bank transfer remains subject to the real-unit validation pass.
